• Using LiOH, as a sintering aid, reduces the activation energy of MgAl 2 O 4 from 790 kJ.mol ?1 to 510 . Reactions between magnesium aluminate spinel and LiOH yield secondary phases that prevent grain growth. There is critical concentration ca. 0.3 wt%, above which growth promoted. The due preferential incorporation Li + Lithium hydroxide, in amounts ranging 0.1 1.2 wt% has been used aid improve densification addition promotes limits sintering, calculated using master curve approach, decreases ± 20 with LiOH. Transparent polycrystalline spinel ceramic was fabricated without any sintering aids by spark plasma sintering method of a mixture of Al2O3 and MgO powders for only 10min soak at 1250°C. Densification, microstructure and optical transparency of spinel were examined. The spinel exhibits an in-line transmission of 55% for a visible-wavelength of 470nm and high hardness value of 2040 HV.
